winter

I know I can’t say sorry
not like you want me to
but I can reach down to your shoes
and try to lace up all the regrets I stepped on too many times.
And I can touch your cheeks a certain way
to cover the cold from freezing your tongue
like it did mine last winter.
And I can gently tug at your waist until you’re closer and closer
but I know I’ll be the only one that feels my heels raise as I reach up
towards your ghost like shadow.
And I know I can say sorry
to whatever is really left
and I know it will never sound right.
It will glitch and stutter and create a static dark blue
and craft itself into something it never was.
And for creating something that apologies can’t fix
For that I am truly sorry.
