cigarettes

I watch you light a cigarette
and let it hug around your lips
as you speak to me

Talk about some girl you used to fuck
last January
as I watch the ashes fall near your black shoes
and I see the haze in your dark brown eyes

Two drinks in
and I like the way you never notice
how I look at you

I watch your lips crease as you smile
your eyes direct over to me

I watch your fingers wrap around the lighter
you’re nervous as I ask
what she meant to you

Too consumed in your own head
you speak to me
as if I was naïve

You smile when you say
“she made me lose my mind”
You laugh
as the ashes fall down
